From 2010, England embarked on a major reform of its education system: replacing an outdated “competence based” national curriculum with an evidence-based knowledge-rich curriculum. The Government also put systematic synthetic phonics at the heart of the teaching of reading; introduced a new maths curriculum and teaching methods based on East Asian approaches; and introduced a computer-based Multiplication Tables Check for 9-year-olds. Just over a decade later, England rose to fourth in the world in the reading ability of 9- and 10-year-olds in the 2021 PIRLS international survey. In PISA, England rose form 25th in reading in 2009 to 13th in 2022; in Maths England rose from 27th in 2009 to 11th in 2022. Nick Gibb was Schools Minister from 2010-12; 2014-21; and 2022-23, a total of 10 years.

This session introduces a groundbreaking approach to shaping schools as “life-balancing communities,” where children’s autonomy, well-being, and meaningful connections thrive. Rooted in insights from their book, Building Minds: Designing Learning Spaces for Connection and Coherence, this interactive discussion explores how schools can transcend traditional frameworks to become environments that nurture resilience, curiosity, and balanced growth. Against the backdrop of modern challenges, this vision ensures that schools are designed not only for academic achievement but also to cultivate students’ social, emotional, and spiritual health.
